Superman has loomed large (literally and metaphorically) in popular culture since his first appearance in 1938 in the very first issue of the Action Comics series. Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster's character was an immediate success, prompting the release of the standalone Superman comic series the following year, a series which has enjoyed continuous publication ever since. The hero's iconic look, featuring a skin-tight blue jumpsuit with an 'S' logo on the chest and the often-derided red briefs. Although the hero is often derided for wearing his briefs on the outside, the costume was actually designed to reflect the Victorian-era strongmen, who themselves wore briefs over flesh-coloured jumpsuits to imitate the classical Greek and Roman athletes immortalised in art. For better or worse, DC Comics' New 52 relaunch of the character did away with the red briefs in favour of an all-over blue suit, a change also reflected in the new movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
