The Basics: How To Have An Oktoberfest Party

Having the best ever Oktoberfest party is simple. Just invite all your friends, stock up on beer, learn some traditional Bavarian drinking songs, hire a yodeller, get comfortable in leather shorts and go nuts on the Oktoberfest party supplies. We’re talking absolutely nuts on Oktoberfest party decorations.

You’re going to want to deck your whole house out in Oktoberfest decorations and blue and white, the colours of the iconic Bavarian flag. Hang Oktoberfest bunting along your walls, blow up bunches of Oktoberfest balloons and drape everything in blue and white streamers. At your front door, hang up a ‘Welcome to Oktoberfest’ signs.

What To Serve At An Oktoberfest Party

Now that you’re sorted for Oktoberfest party supplies, you’ll need to think about food. You can go one of two ways here; either basic Oktoberfest party snacks for guests to nibble with their Märzen or a full sit-down meal.

For easy snacks, look to the traditional Oktoberfest food stalls. Pretzels are always good (the bigger and cheesier the better!), or you could go for bratwurst done on the barbeque served in soft white rolls – fried onions on top, please – and heart-shaped gingerbread cookies with messages iced on them. Traditionally these lebkuchenherz feature love notes – “ich liebe dich” – but you can ice your own and write whatever you like.

If you’re more of a foodie, try roasting your own pork hock, making your own potato dumplings or frying your own schnitzel. Just remember the three levels of the German food pyramid: carbohydrates, meat and beer. Don’t forget the beer.

The traditional style of beer served by the six breweries in Munich at Oktoberfest is called Märzen. Märzen is a low fermentation beer and can contain up to 6% alcohol and is stronger and darker – usually a distinctive reddish colour – than traditional beer. You’ll be able to find the right kind of beer at most good bottle shops, but there are no rules. Drink whatever beer you like, we won’t tell. Just make sure you serve it in one of our half litre beer steins, or at least cups in Bavarian blue.

Fun And Games

Keep the party going with a few games during the evening. Grab one of our beer pong sets and challenge your friends to an Oktober-pong tournament.

Or start a game of FlunkyBall - a popular drinking sport in Germany. Find a space outside and make two teams of three or more players standing on either side of the ‘pitch’ with a bottle in the middle and each player holding a full, closed beer. Players take turns throwing a ping pong ball at the bottle; if they hit it then their team can all crack open their beers and start drinking, but they must stop drinking as soon as the other team runs in and retrieves the ball.
